Icebox melon or a giant on the vine

A picnic watermelon and an icebox melon are two fridge jobs. If it will not fit in the refrigerator, it is a picnic fruit, not a weeknight leftover. Both still want the January through March window in Central Florida, and both still want daytime 70–85°F.

UF/IFAS Gardening Solutions names Sugar Baby and Mickeylee for icebox size, and Jubilee (also called Florida Giant), Crimson Sweet, and Charleston Grey 133 for the large end. Growing watermelon takes in excess of 18 to 24 square feet per plant either way. A large variety can drop several 15 to 20 pound melons at once. Fruit size runs 6 to 50 pounds depending on cultivar.

Heat does not pick the size

The vine’s temperature band is the same for icebox and picnic types. Gardening Solutions: best days 70°F to 85°F, tolerate 90°F. Central Florida plants January through March because the cool season is short and spring heat arrives early. Hypothesis: a giant cultivar in a late plant is a worse heat bet than an icebox in the published window, because more days of fruit fill sit in peak humidity. IFAS does not publish that ranking. It publishes the window and the square footage.

What is an icebox watermelon?

Is cantaloupe a small watermelon?

No. Cantaloupe is a separate spring seed crop on the UF/IFAS month list. Do not treat it as watermelon.

Do seedless plants need a partner?

Yes. Seedless watermelons are sterile triploids. They need a seeded pollenizer and bees. White specks in the flesh are seed coats.
