Winter trucks, then a spring vine
UF/IFAS Gardening Solutions says Florida has a great climate for watermelon and is a leading producer for the nation. The fact that surprises people: Florida is the only state in the country that produces watermelon from December to April. Florida Crop/Pest Management Profile: Watermelon (CIR1236/PI031) repeats that Florida is the only U.S. supplier in those months, and cites USDA/NASS 2025: in 2024 Florida ranked first nationally, 24.7% of U.S. production. That is a commercial winter-to-spring fact. A driveway vine is a different clock.

Heat the vine wants
Gardening Solutions puts the best daytime range at 70°F to 85°F, with tolerance up to 90°F. UF/IFAS watermelon guidance says watermelons require a long, warm growing season, frost easily damages seedlings, and germination is very slow when soil sits below 70°F. Growers have a planting window of only a few weeks and must balance frost loss against an early harvest. Central Florida’s home window is January through March. Commercial Central Florida planting in that paper is January 15 to March 15.

A short cool season
The 2023 USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map is the ZIP lookup for average extreme minimums: zone 10a is 30–35°F, zone 9b is 25–30°F. Central Florida sits in that band. Those numbers are averages of the coldest night, not a promise that 32°F never happens. The cool season is short. There is no long northern spring. The job is to plant as soon as soil can warm, then let 80 to 100 days run before peak summer humidity.
Hypothesis: a January–March plant in Orange County lets fruit fill while days still sit in the 70–85°F band IFAS names. A May seed hits 90°F+ days and gummy-stem weather during fruit fill. Gardening Solutions gives January through March for Central Florida; it does not publish an Orlando-specific April cutoff. Label that as a hypothesis, not a rule.
